Behind the Scenes: Designing Every Boxing Short for GIANT The Prince Naseem Biopic

When the team behind GIANT called, the brief was clear – authenticity, accuracy, and no shortcuts.

This wasn’t about creating a single hero kit. Suzi Wong was tasked with designing and making every boxing short and fight kit worn throughout the film, covering Prince Naseem’s career and every opponent he faced in the ring.

Our behind-the-scenes video takes you inside the process — from early research and design through to screen-ready fightwear.

From Archive Research to Screen-Ready Fightwear

Every piece of fightwear seen in GIANT started with research. From early amateur bouts through to Prince Naseem’s most iconic professional looks, each era demanded its own approach.

We studied archive footage, stills, fight records, and references to understand:

  • Fabric choices used at the time
  • Cut and length of boxing shorts
  • Waistband styles, tassels, trims, and detailing
  • Colour palettes associated with specific fights and periods

This groundwork shaped every design decision that followed.

Working With the Film’s Costume Department

Collaboration was key.

We worked closely with the costume department and director to ensure the fightwear sat seamlessly within the wider visual language of the film. That meant balancing historical accuracy with cinematic impact — ensuring kits looked right under lighting, movement, and camera.

Classic satin trunks and tassels sit alongside the bold colours and detailing that defined Prince Naseem’s rise and personality. Each decision served the story.

Making Boxing Shorts for Every Fighter, Not Just the Star

While Prince Naseem’s kits are instantly recognisable, the realism of GIANT relies just as much on the fighters across the ring.

Every opponent required their own fightwear — designed to feel era-accurate, believable, and grounded in real boxing culture. No generic costumes. No shortcuts.

Each boxing short and fight kit was:

  • Designed specifically for the character and period
  • Constructed in-house
  • Fitted and refined for performance and movement on screen

This level of detail ensures that every bout feels authentic, not staged.

Built In-House, The Suzi Wong Way

Every boxing short and fight kit for GIANT was researched, designed, and made in-house by Suzi Wong.

This allowed full control over:

  • Fit and finish
  • Fabric selection
  • Embroidery and detailing
  • Consistency across multiple fighters and eras

The result is fightwear that doesn’t just look the part — it holds up under scrutiny.
